The challenges of building in high altitude

Friday 8 September — 15:00 - 15:45
The Talks — Hall 7

Description

Building for the cold or at high altitudes means adapting architecture to extreme conditions. Whether it’s the wind, the cold, or the weight of the snow, it’s important to envision optimal insulation and select the appropriate materials and energy sources. Maximizing the view, just like a structure’s dialogue with the surrounding forest and/or peaks, also comes into play.

Franck Denis Foray

Project Manager & Senior Architect MNAL, MArch - Snøhetta

During his studies, Frank developed his architectural language from the largest-scale mock-ups possible and from his approach to nature within his projects. His commitment and architectural devotion led him to the Snøhetta Agency. He has been working there since 1995, full-time since 1997. He has been part of this agency’s development in France since 1999, later establishing the basis for the Paris Studio in 2018. Frank now works as Director and Project Manager on various types of projects in Northern European countries. The projects led by Snøhetta vary considerably in terms of function, scale, and environmental conditions, from projects in Africa to the mountains and fjords of Norway, and from a 19m2 cabin to 80,000 m2 cultural centers. Projects he has handled as Project Leader have included the new Lascaux Cave Center in Montignac, the new headquarters of Le Monde in Paris, the Maritime Center of Esberg, the Center for Maritime Research in Trondheim, Norway, cabins located in the heart of Norwegian fjords, a train and bus station in Lysaker, Norway, the Bergen Fine Arts Academy, and the University Library of Conakry in Guinea. He has also worked on the new Opera in Oslo, the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin, and the King Aziz International Cultural Heritage Center in Saudi Arabia. He is now a member of the board at Snøhetta.

In 2018, Sarah became one of the first employees of Snøhetta's French branch in Paris. Through the projects she has taken on, she stands out for her taste for interior architecture and her ability to manage complex projects. In particular, she worked on the competition to renovate the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre, and more recently on an innovative project for a vertical waste sorting and recovery centre. Alongside her professional practice, Sarah has also been a lecturer at Science Po Paris in the Master's programme in Urban and Territorial Strategies since 2020.
