From Campus MaNa to La Grange: transmission at the heart of the region

Description

Designers Thomas Dariel and Erwan Bouroullec have Burgundy and the desire to pass on their passion for design in common. With Campus MaNa, Thomas Dariel has transformed a veterinary school into a professional training center dedicated to design. With La Grange, Erwan Bouroullec has given a new lease of life to an old farm building, hosting workshops in the process. These two projects are rooted in the heart of the region, giving a new meaning to creation.

Designer & Co-founder - Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

Ronan (born 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (born 1976) are brothers and designers based in Paris. They have been working together for about fifteen years bonded by diligence and challenged by their distinct personalities. Their studio is based in Paris and their team numbers around six people. In 1997, they were spotted by Cappellini, giving them their first industrial design projects. They began working with the Galerie kreo in 2000 and had their first solo show there in 2001. Issey Miyake then hired them to design the boutique to house his new collection « A-Poc ». They met then Rolf Felhbaum, President of Vitra, and worked on a new office system entitled « Joyn». Since then, they have gone on to work with Artek, Alessi, Axor Hansgrohe, Cappellini, Established & Sons, Flos, Hay, Kettal, Kvadrat, Kartell, Glas Italia, Ligne Roset, Magis, Iittala, Mattiazzi, Mutina, Nani Marquina, Samsung and Vitra. Their work has covered many field ranging from the design of small objects as jewellery to spatial arrangements and architecture, from craftsmanship to industrial scale, from drawings to videos and photography. The designers also maintain an experimental activity with Gallery kreo, which is also essential to the development of their work. Designs of the Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are part of select international museums’ permanent collections such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Design Museum in London, and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Several monographic exhibitions have been devoted to their work: «Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec» at the Design Museum, London (2002) and «Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec» at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2004), «Album» at the Vitra Design Museum (2012) and «Bivouac» at the Centre Pompidou Metz (2011) and then at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (2012-2013). In 2013, the Arts Décoratifs, Paris presented «Momentané» and more recently they presented “17 Screens” at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2015). In 2016, the city of Rennes showed their latest researches in 4 exhibitions in three different places (Frac Bretagne, Les Champs Libres and the Parliament of Bretagne). A special website has been conceived for the occasion: www.bouroullec.com/press Until January 22, the Vitra Design Museum showcased the exhibition Reveries Urbaines. A comprehensive monograph was released in 2012, Works, Phaidon Press. In 2013, under the art direction of Cornel Windlin, JRP Ringier published a 864-page paperback book called Drawing that collects more than 850 drawings that Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec made between 2005 and 2012. In the past, two monographs have been published : Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec published by Phaidon Press (2003) and Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec – Catalogue de Raison (Paris: Images Modernes / kreo, 2002).

As a great grandson of a French furniture designer, grandson of a jazz musician and son of an architect, he has always drawn his strength and inspiration from his family heritage. French Designer by training and tireless traveler, he came to China in 2006 to launch his own interior design studio at the age of 24. Dariel has since earned the praise of the interior design industry. He has received several awards, among them selection for Best International Interior Designer – 2012 Andrew Martin Awards/ awarded Top 100 talents in Architecture and Design for AD Magazine in 2019, 2017, 2015 and 2013/ Top 40 Young Design Talents under 40 – 2013 Perspective 40 Under 40/ Top 10 Best Designer in China – Vantage Magazine 2016. In 2017, Thomas Dariel has been elected Best Young Designer of the Year by EDIDA China Awards and Best Designer of the Year by Trends and Trends Home magazines. Dariel draws his creativity from the different worlds of design, fashion, gastronomy, visual arts and luxury. His design philosophy is driven by his passion for breaking traditional codes and clichés which creates a new language for each design. By confronting heritage and cutting-edge innovations, combining French design heritage with Eastern cultural influence, Thomas Dariel’s open approach unfolds original perspectives. Thomas Dariel , a singular signature that he has extended with success to product design, signing with – among others – Cappellini, Lelièvre; Cire Trudon, Leblon Delienne. In 2016 and while pursuing his interior design activity, Thomas decided to revive a childhood’s dream by launching his own brand of furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories, Maison Dada. In 2020, Thomas was appointed co-president of the French Design Editor Federation. This new role allows him to reunite the French editors and speak as one voice as well as to promote the French Design and its singularity. Some of his design have entered the very prestigious French Mobilier National, writing history of the French creation. In 2021, Thomas Dariel is also leading the ambitious project of Campus Mana (Les Manufactures Nationales), a Design and Crafts International Campus located in French Burgundy where Design & Crafts workshops will be interacting with Design & Crafts Training at the highest level. In 2022, Thomas Dariel was awarded by Le FRENCH DESIGN 100 for his projects at Dariel Studio and Maison Dada.
