Hong Kong wants to become the leading hub for design in Asia. Its government has tasked Maison&Objet with supporting this initiative over the long term. Starting this year, Maison&Objet and key design stakeholders from Hong Kong are mobilizing to create the first edition of a design week. In sync with the highly renowned Business of Design Week, the Design Inspire exhibition produced by the HKTDC, and a circuit of 60 design and creative venues throughout the city, Maison&Objet Design Factory presents, from December 5-7, 2024, 120 brands and 15 top-tier designers who will be sharing their expertise in the area of sustainable design.
The combination of “Prix pour l’Intelligence de la Main®” (Prize for the Intelligence of Handcraft) award winners, Uchronia, Normal Studio, Le French Design, Materi’o, and Elizabeth Leriche…the top key players in French design and fine craft will all take off for Hong Kong in December, led by Maison&Objet. They are answering the call of the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency of the Government of the Special Administrative Region (CCIDA), which has been hard at work for the past several years to position the Hong Kong region as the essential place for design in Asia, just as it is an artistic and cultural metropolis that connects Asia with the West. It is also pursuing its continuing strategy in contemporary art, with Art Basel. In the world of design, France and Maison&Objet are the benchmarks in this field. The Maison&Objet Design Factory exhibition will take place within a 1000 m2 space at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The Hong Kong Ministry of Culture wanted to place this first edition under the banner of sustainable development, a field in which the French design ecosystem is recognized as a trailblazer. Divided into five different spaces, it will present a range of highly inspiring solutions in terms of materials, conceptualization, and creation.
As an introduction, the first section, entitled “Muse Nature”, will be a dialogue between ten French artisans and ten Chinese artisans, created by Jiang Qiong’er. This international artist and designer offers a bicultural perspective, at the intersection of the Chinese creative heritage and contemporary design. Then, the focus will move onto French expert craftsmanship within several different settings: Normal Studio, with its version of a sustainable dwelling whose components are entirely made of recycled or natural materials, the Matéri’o space, reflecting the database created by Quentin Hirsinger, which lists 9,000 innovative materials, and, finally, a set of 13 design pieces created by a selection of French designers within a setting designed by Studio Uchronia. Selected by Le French Design, each of these creations highlights an innovative design process. The visit will conclude in style with “Terra Cosmos”, the immersive exhibition designed by Elizabeth Leriche. Somewhere between the sky and the earth, illuminated by the rays of the moon or by a burning sun, the selections made by Elisabeth Leriche spotlight a unique blend of color schemes with sustainable and innovative designs.
