MINI design tour - June 2020

MINI

Each month, MINI and Maison&Objet share their hand-picked selection of three exciting design events. Both on and offline, exhibitions are throwing open their doors once more and ideas are continuing to circulate. June’s Design Tour is jam-packed with up-beat, stimulating and fun initiatives and get-togethers. Garden-based workshops and talks in Milan, urban innovation for a greener, more sustainable city in Paris, and creative variations on colour in Ghent invite us to broaden our horizons and our routines.

We must learn to make ubiquitous use of the open spaces in our squares, parks and gardens

During the Covid-19 crisis, such were the words spoken by Stefano Boeri, President of Triennale and an urban architect renowned for his green installations. As of 15th June, the Milanese institution’s summer is set to be resolutely green with Triennale Estate, a new cultural date for the diary featuring shows and events dedicated to design, the performing arts and photography held in the Garden Giancarlo De Carlo.

Urban Culture

Reënstok is a rainwater collection and storage facility that can be fitted to buildings’ facades to water urban plants and gardens. The project, which was dreamed up by designers from the Faltazi Studio, was presented as part of FAIRE 2018 DESIGN URBAIN, a call for innovative projects partnered by MINI. Having been picked out as MINI’s firm favourite and walking away with the award, the project was rolled out in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, where it can still be seen in rue Louis Blanc. The tank waters the gardens of a residential complex and a  communal garden managed by a neighbourhood association.

Inspiring hues

Where does colour come from? How is it created? What impact does it have? The Ghent Design Museum answers all these questions by drawing bold parallels between Jan Van Eyck’s palette and the innovative use of colour in design. Ghent is home to a major altarpiece that is recognised as the master’s work, and this original exhibition is part of a one-year city-wide event celebrating the artist. On the programme, an all-encompassing experience that features a stroll through Van Eyck’s world of colour and “Experience Rooms” that stimulate every sense.
